What is California Virtual Phone Number?
A California virtual phone number is a business phone number with a California area code that runs over the internet instead of a physical phone line. It works through VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), so calls route through the cloud to whatever device you choose: your mobile phone, laptop, or desk phone.
You don’t need to live in California or have an office there to use one. A remote team in Denver, a founder in Toronto, or a support team in Manila can all answer calls on a 213 or 415 number as if they were sitting in Downtown LA or San Francisco’s Financial District.
California Area Codes and Cities
California has more area codes than any other state. Here are the most requested ones by city:
| City | Area Codes |
| Los Angeles | 213, 310, 323, 424, 747, 818 |
| San Francisco | 415, 628 |
| San Diego | 619, 858 |
| Sacramento | 916, 279 |
| San Jose | 408, 669 |
| Oakland | 510 |
| Fresno | 559 |
| Long Beach | 562 |
| Anaheim / Orange County | 714, 657 |
| Riverside | 951 |
| Bakersfield | 661 |
| Santa Barbara | 805 |
| Palm Springs | 760 |
| Stockton / San Joaquin | 209 |
| Concord / Contra Costa | 925 |
Other active California area codes include 442, 530, 626, 650, 707, 831, and 909.
A bit of area code history. California only had three area codes when the North American numbering system launched in 1947: 213 for the south, 415 for the central coast, and 916 for the north. 213 originally covered everything from the Mexican border up past San Luis Obispo, including all of Los Angeles. As the state’s population grew, it was split five separate times, spinning off 714 in 1951, 805 in 1957, 818 in 1984, 310 in 1991, and 323 in 1998, before 213 and 323 were merged back into a single overlay area in 2017. It’s why a 213 number still reads as “the original LA number” even though it now covers a fraction of the county it once did.

Types of California Virtual Phone Numbers
California Local Numbers
A California local number gives your business a genuine 213, 415, or 619 presence without a physical office. Customers in Downtown LA, San Francisco's Financial District, or San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter see a familiar local number, making them far more likely to answer and call back. Ideal for businesses building long-term customer relationships in a specific California city.
California Mobile Numbers
A California virtual mobile number works just like a local SIM-based number, without the SIM. Use it for calls, SMS, and OTP verification on platforms like WhatsApp Business and fintech apps that require a genuine US mobile prefix. Perfect for teams that need a credible, mobile-first presence in the state.
California Toll-Free Numbers
Let California customers call your business at zero cost to them. A toll-free 800 number signals that you're serious about customer support, removing the cost barrier that stops people from reaching out. Best suited for customer service teams, statewide helplines, and businesses running high inbound call volumes.
California Vanity Numbers
A vanity number turns your phone number into a brand asset. Choose a memorable, keyword-rich sequence that reflects your business, like 1-800-CA-SOLAR, then use it across ads, billboards, and marketing campaigns targeting California customers. Easier to remember means more calls and stronger recall.
Expand Your Office Worldwide with Virtual Office Phone Numbers
Easily handle incoming calls from customers and businesses to provide greater customer support at their preferred country number.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Anyone can purchase a California virtual number regardless of where they live. It’s commonly used by remote teams, out-of-state businesses expanding into California, and individuals who want a local presence in a specific California city.
Most local California numbers require no extra documentation beyond a valid payment method. Some number types or high-volume purchases may require ID and address verification under carrier rules.
One local California number is included free with every KrispCall plan, starting at $15/user/month billed annually. Additional local or mobile numbers cost $4/month, and toll-free numbers cost $5/month.
Yes. You can filter by city or area code when selecting your number. Availability depends on current inventory for that code.
Not from the caller ID. It will show a standard California number, the same as any local business line, and most callers have no way to tell where the person answering is physically located. What can give it away is context: if a customer expects a callback within the hour and you’re in a different time zone with limited overlap, or if your voicemail or team availability doesn’t match local business hours, that’s usually what raises questions, not the number itself.
Free options exist, such as Google Voice, but they come with real limitations for business use: no CRM integration, limited call handling, and terms of service that don’t cover business or commercial use. A KrispCall California number starts at $12/user/month and includes call recording, CRM integrations, and a unified inbox for your whole team, which most free tools don’t offer.
Yes. California virtual numbers support both voice calls and SMS messaging, and can be managed from the KrispCall web app, desktop app, or mobile app.
Yes. You can transfer an existing number from another carrier without changing the number itself. Porting typically takes a few business days.
Most local numbers activate within minutes of purchase. Numbers that require carrier verification may take slightly longer.
