What is a Toll-Free Number?
A toll-free number is a telephone number that is completely free for your customers to call. Rather than the caller being charged, you, the business, pay for incoming calls as part of your service plan. The result is a frictionless, cost-free way for customers to reach you, no matter where they are calling from. Toll-free numbers are often called “1-800 numbers”, a name that has stuck since the original 800 prefix was introduced in 1966.
Today, toll-free calling spans six active prefixes: 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, and 833. Every prefix works identically; your callers pay nothing, regardless of which prefix your number uses. When a customer dials your toll-free number, the call travels through the public telephone network and is forwarded to whichever phone line, mobile device, or virtual phone system you have configured.
From the customer’s side, it works like any ordinary phone call; they dial, you answer. The only difference is that the call costs them nothing. With KrispCall, your toll-free number is fully virtual, meaning there is no physical hardware, no office line, and no geographic restriction.
You can get a toll-free number from over 100 countries, forward calls to any device anywhere in the world, and manage everything from a single app. Whether you are a solo founder or a growing support team, your toll-free number works wherever your business does. Modern toll-free numbers are not limited to voice calls.

6 Benefits of Toll-Free Numbers for Businesses
Every time a potential customer hesitates to call because they are unsure about charges, you lose a lead. Every time a customer cannot reach you across borders, you lose a sale. A toll-free number solves all these - for less than the cost of a single lost customer.
Look Established From Day One
A toll-free number instantly signals that your business is serious, accessible, and built for customers. Fortune 500 companies have used toll-free numbers for decades, and that association still carries weight today. Whether you are a solo founder or a 50-person team, a toll-free number gives your business the same professional image as the biggest brands in your industry.
Make It Effortless for Customers to Reach You
When customers can call or text your business for free, they do it more often. More contact means more questions answered, more objections handled, and more sales closed. Your toll-free number is both call and SMS-enabled, so customers can reach you the way they prefer, not just the way that is convenient for you.
Build a National and International Presence
Local numbers tie your business to a specific area code. Toll-free numbers do not. They signal nationwide availability, and give customers in any region the confidence to call. With KrispCall, that reach extends beyond borders; you can get toll-free numbers from over 100 countries, making your business genuinely accessible to customers worldwide, not just across town.
Marketing & call tracking
Assign a unique toll-free number to each marketing campaign, a different number for your Google Ads, your billboard, and your email campaign. When calls come in, you know exactly which channel drove them. This kind of call tracking turns your toll-free number from a contact point into a marketing intelligence tool, providing data most businesses never think to collect.

E-commerce & Retail
Online stores lose sales when customers cannot easily reach someone before making a purchase decision. A toll-free number on your website and checkout page signals trust, customers know a real business is behind the order. E-commerce teams use toll-free numbers for pre-sale inquiries, order status updates, and returns, turning a potential churn point into a loyalty-building moment.

In healthcare, accessibility is everything. Clinics, telehealth providers, and medical practices use toll-free numbers to make it easier for patients to book appointments, request prescription refills, and reach care teams without worrying about call charges.

Law firms, accounting practices, and consultancies use toll-free numbers to handle new client inquiries professionally.
Real Estate
Real estate agents and brokerages use toll-free numbers to manage high volumes of inbound inquiries across multiple listings and locations. Assign a unique toll-free number to each property listing or marketing campaign to track exactly which ads are driving calls. Use call forwarding to route inquiries to the right agent based on location or availability — so a serious buyer always reaches a live person, not voicemail.

When a customer dials your toll-free number, the call travels through the public telephone network and is automatically forwarded to your designated phone line, mobile device, or virtual phone system. The caller pays nothing, you, the business, cover the cost of the call as part of your monthly service plan. From the customer’s side, it works exactly like dialing any other phone number.
With KrispCall, toll-free numbers are available from $15 per user per month. This includes your toll-free number, call forwarding, SMS, voicemail, and access to the KrispCall app. There are no setup fees, no hidden charges, and no long-term contracts. Additional numbers can be added to your account at any time for a small monthly fee.
The 833 prefix was officially released by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on June 3, 2017. It was introduced to meet growing demand for toll-free numbers as the earlier prefixes, 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, and 844, became increasingly allocated. Because 833 is the newest prefix, it currently has the highest availability of any toll-free prefix, making it the easiest to find a specific or vanity number.
There is no functional difference between any toll-free prefix. A call to an 888 number works exactly the same way as a call to an 833 number – the caller pays nothing, and the call is routed to the number’s owner. The only real differences are recognition and availability:
- 888 is the most widely recognized after the original 800
- 877 and 866 are well-established and trusted by businesses
- 855 and 844 offer strong availability and vanity options
- 833 is the newest prefix with the most numbers available
With KrispCall, setup takes less than 3 minutes. Create your account, choose your country and prefix, select your number, and your toll-free number is instantly active.
Yes. Every toll-free number is SMS-enabled by default, meaning customers can text your toll-free number the same way they would call it.
Yes. Calling a toll-free number from a mobile phone is completely free for the caller, whether they are using a smartphone or a landline.
A vanity toll-free number is a number specifically chosen to spell out a word or phrase on a phone keypad, for example, 1-888-LAWYER or 1-877-GET-HELP. Instead of a random sequence of digits, your number becomes part of your brand.
Toll-free numbers are free for callers within the country where the number is registered. International callers, dialing from a different country, may incur standard international calling charges depending on their carrier and country.
